Cucina Povera is the solo project of Finnish-born Luxembourgish vocalist-synthesist Maria Rossi (formerly of Tarantula and Luxos) who experiments with layered vocals and found sound. Pre-modern and postmodern, Rossi’s work is a strange interaction between the spirit world and stark materialism. She has been featured on BBC Late Junction, NTS and The Wire an is playing her first European gigs to close the chapter of her second solo release, Zoom. The album is a stark collection of simple melodies, harmonized with a looping pedal and recorded into a pocket recorder. There are no instruments, apart from a clip top glass bottle picked up in a hardware shop. Working from the dual framework of precarity and frivolity, Rossi creates an amorphous and surreal new musical language.
