Part-French and part-Moroccan, producer, singer, and visual essayist Fawkes translates traditional songwriting into a challenging, vocally haunted experience. Working with murmurs, screams, drones, or circles of machinery noises, she lets swirls sounds in order to report on inner lives, fears, and quests. In her 2015 EP ‘Vesuval,’ which was released with Desire Records, she forms abstract and yet percussive musical spirals. The EP’s opener ‘Funeral’ can be described as the artist’s chaotic study of grief. In the accompanying video, she directs evolving neon lava and shape-shifting women figures. Acutely aware of her pieces’ emotional tensions and metaphysical aspects, Fawkes wants to make the invisible visible in her visual work.
