3hd and EBM(T) collaboration インフラ INFRA release DJ Paypal‘s soundtrack “[SOI] Re-Animation” from the audio-visual collaboration with fellow anime lover Makoto Taniguchi commission, originally performed at Yamamoto Gendai Gallery in Tokyo in 2017.
The respective Berlin-based producer and Tokyo-based artist riffed on anime culture with their own life-sized character, created by Taniguchi, and accompanied by a musical composition by DJ Paypal. The film and live performance crossed cultural and linguistic boundaries through sound and animation, offering an insight into music as a universal activity.
Taniguchi’s work is based on the imagery of Japanese animation tropes, appearing as heartthrobs and idols. Passed down to the artist since his youth in the 80s, the characters are acknowledged as a common, general occurrence within contemporary Japanese society.
DJ Paypal is one of disco, funk, juke and footwork’s most elusive artists. The Berlin-based producer is affiliated with Chicago’s Teklife crew, Glasgow underground leaders LuckyMe, and most recently, Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint, has built a family through online footwork forums, SoulSeek mining, and countless tracks shared across the globe. He’s been spinning footwork in novel directions ever since, highlighting the genre’s undervalued sense of playfulness in the process.
