Krista Papista’s current work engages in developing and queering, politically-induced, reinvented versions of history. The Nicosia-born, Berlin-based performer, producer, and director explores the way in which the combination of contemporary Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and Balkan folklore, with computerized punk music can act as subversive counterpoints to homogeneous, nationalist narratives.

Her new album, Fucklore, delves into the pockets of anarchy, mourning, and exuberance she finds in traditional styles, sounds, and ceremonies surviving between the existentially worn out, and ferociously alive. It touches on topics such as the murders of migrant women in Cyprus, and other micro-histories that deviate from grand narratives, seeking to trace conceptual and critical affinities between the fight against nationalism, and the reinvention of folklore in the spirit of a queer phenomenology.
