MUXXXE, aka Alexis Martinez Gutierrez, is a cross-border persona created to present an anonymous person of a “third gender.” Situated in Tijuana, their practice is loaded with geopolitical notes, where what it means to be a “queer” latinx living at the boundary of a “third world” country is critically reflected on through an interdisciplinary approach of music, fashion, site-specific interventions, installation and performance. Through that, the artist explores larger realities/problems from the unique relationship between the border city of Mexico and the United States, including an obsession with fame, beauty and technology, performance of gender, and the migratory crisis.Gutierrez is currently working on their upcoming EP, SEMENTERIO, and were part of the artistic educational program “New Native Narratives” by The Front Arte y Cultura. They have received FONCA artist funding in the category of performance and alternative media, 2020-2021, and been selected at the “XXIII Bienal Plástica de Baja California.” Gutierrez’s work has been published through different international media such as I-D, Playground, Telemundo, BRUT, ABC News, and Cultura Colectiva, amongs others and have participated in exhibitions, concerts and festivals in Mexico, Guatemala, United States, Australia, Canada, Spain, Czech Republic, and Germany.
